The Subjunctive mood in object clauses after the verb "to wish"

The Subjunctive mood can be used in object clauses after the verb to wish.

• Model I: If the action in the subordinate clause is simultaneous with the action in the principal clause, the Past Subjunctive of the verb to be or the Past Indefinite of all other verbs is used.

  I wish(ed) we were here.
  Жаль (мне было жаль), что его здесь нет.

  I wish(ed) I had enough money to buy his Opel.
  Жаль (мне было жаль), что у меня нет достаточно денег, чтобы купить его Опель.

• Model II: If the action in the subordinate clause is prior to the action in the principal clause the Past Perfect is used.

  I wish(ed) I had not said this.
  Жаль (мне было жаль), что я сказал это.

• There is a special model with the mood auxiliary would which is used to express polite request or annoyance.

  This model is used to denote a future action and only in those cases where the subject of the principal clause does not coincide with that of the subordinate clause.

  I wish you would play for us.
  Хотел бы я, чтобы вы нам что-нибудь сыграли.

  I wish you would mind your own business.
  Хотел бы я, чтобы вы не совали нос не в свое дело.
